BYOD vs. BYOM for Meeting Rooms

Understand BYOD and BYOM meeting room models, how they differ, and how each affects laptops, meeting software, cameras, and room devices.

BYOD means Bring Your Own Device.

BYOM means Bring Your Own Meeting.

They are related concepts, but they describe different parts of the meeting-room workflow.

What Is BYOD?

BYOD allows users to bring and use their own laptop, tablet, or other device in a meeting space.

A BYOD room might allow a participant to:

  • Present content
  • Join a meeting
  • Connect to a display
  • Use a room device
  • Access their normal applications

The personal device remains an important part of the meeting workflow.

What Is BYOM?

BYOM focuses on allowing users to use their preferred conferencing application while making use of the room's hardware.

For example, a user might open a video meeting on a laptop and connect that laptop to:

  • Room camera
  • Room microphone
  • Room speakers
  • Room display

The user's own meeting application remains in control.

Key Difference

The distinction can be summarized as:

BYOD = your device

BYOM = your meeting platform/workflow

A BYOM room can therefore be built around a laptop that uses Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, or another supported platform while using the room's installed peripherals.

BYOD and BYOM Can Exist Together

The two are not mutually exclusive.

A user can bring a laptop into a BYOD room and use it for a BYOM meeting.

What Needs to Be Compatible?

A BYOM setup depends on several layers:

  • Laptop operating system
  • Meeting software
  • Camera drivers
  • USB audio/video devices
  • Display interfaces
  • Network access
  • Room-control architecture

USB Video Class (UVC) defines a standard class for USB video devices. The USB-IF Video Class v1.5 specification describes the protocol that allows cameras to communicate with host operating systems without proprietary drivers. However, physical USB connectivity alone does not guarantee that every device and application combination will work as expected.

When Is BYOM Useful?

BYOM can be useful when organizations:

  • Use multiple conferencing platforms
  • Want users to keep their preferred meeting workflows
  • Need flexible meeting-room usage
  • Want to connect laptops to installed room peripherals
