Smart Board USB Compatibility Guide

Learn how USB compatibility works on smart boards and what to check when connecting cameras, microphones, storage devices, and other peripherals.

USB is a connection standard, not a guarantee that every USB peripheral will work on every device.

A smart board may provide one or more USB ports, but supported devices depend on the board's operating system, hardware, firmware, drivers, and applications.

Common USB Devices

Smart boards may be used with:

  • Cameras
  • Microphones
  • Speakerphones
  • Keyboards
  • Mice
  • USB storage
  • Touch accessories
  • Other USB peripherals

USB Class Compatibility

USB devices can belong to standardized device classes.

Examples include:

  • USB Video Class (UVC) — for cameras and video devices. The USB-IF Video Class v1.5 specification defines the current standard.
  • USB Audio Class (UAC) — for microphones, speakerphones, and audio interfaces.
  • Human Interface Device (HID) — for keyboards, mice, and similar input devices.

Devices adhering to these standard classes are more likely to work across different operating systems without manufacturer-specific drivers.

Physical Port vs. Functional Compatibility

There are at least four different questions:

  1. Can the connector physically fit?
  2. Can the port provide sufficient power?
  3. Can the operating system recognize the device?
  4. Can the target application use the device?

A "yes" to the first question does not guarantee a "yes" to the others.

USB-C Requires Extra Attention

USB-C describes a connector shape and a set of possible capabilities — not one single function.

Depending on the implementation, a USB-C port may carry:

  • USB data
  • Video through DisplayPort Alternate Mode (defined by VESA)
  • Power delivery
  • Other supported signals

A USB-C port should therefore be evaluated based on its documented supported functions, not the connector shape alone. A USB-C port that supports only charging will not carry video.

USB Compatibility Checklist

Before deployment, confirm:

  • Port type and connector
  • USB version (2.0, 3.0, 3.1, etc.)
  • Device class (UVC, UAC, HID)
  • Operating system and version
  • Driver requirements
  • Application support
  • Power requirements
  • Video/audio format support
  • Any manufacturer restrictions

Enterprise Deployment

For a single device, compatibility can be tested manually.

For many meeting rooms, create a validated device matrix that records:

Board → Operating System → Peripheral → Application → Driver/Firmware → Result

This helps reduce deployment failures caused by combinations that were never tested together.
