PTZ vs. Fixed Conference Cameras

What Is a PTZ Camera?
PTZ stands for:

PTZ cameras can be controlled manually or automatically, depending on the system.
What Is a Fixed Conference Camera?
A fixed camera does not physically move.
Instead, it may use:
- Wide-angle lenses
- Digital cropping
- Software auto framing
- AI-based participant detection
A modern fixed camera can therefore provide intelligent framing without physically moving.
PTZ Advantages
PTZ can be useful when:
- The room is large

Speaker Switching
Some PTZ cameras support Speaker Switching — a mode that combines physical camera movement with microphone activity detection. When a new person speaks, the camera physically moves and zooms toward that position, rather than cropping a static image. This is distinct from software-based speaker tracking on fixed cameras.
Zoom documents Speaker Switching as a separate camera mode available only on certain certified PTZ cameras in combination with compatible microphones. The physical movement provides a different result from software cropping, particularly in large rooms where participants are spread far apart.
Fixed Camera Advantages
Fixed cameras may be useful when:
- The room is small
- A wide-angle lens covers the participant area
- Simple installation is preferred
- Manual or physical camera movement is unnecessary
PTZ vs. Auto Framing
PTZ movement and software framing solve different problems.
A PTZ camera changes the physical viewing direction or zoom level.
Software auto framing changes the portion of the captured image that is presented.
Some systems combine both approaches — a PTZ camera can also run auto framing software to reduce the need for manual control.
Choosing a Camera Architecture
