What Is an Interactive Flat Panel Display (IFPD)?
Learn what an interactive flat panel display (IFPD) is, how it differs from a regular display and a smart board, and what components and operating systems to evaluate.
Table of Contents
An interactive flat panel display (IFPD) is a large-format commercial touchscreen that combines a high-resolution display, touch input, computing platform, and collaboration software into one unit. Unlike a regular monitor or television, it is designed for groups to work directly on the screen — writing, presenting, annotating, and joining meetings together.
The abbreviations IFP and IFPD are used interchangeably. The term is most common in commercial procurement contexts; in everyday use, people often call the same devices smart boards or interactive displays.
What an IFPD Typically Includes
Modern interactive flat panels generally provide:
- 4K UHD resolution
- Multi-touch input (infrared or capacitive)
- Digital whiteboarding and annotation
- Wireless screen sharing
- HDMI, USB, and network connectivity
- Built-in speakers
- An embedded operating system (Android or Windows)
Higher-specification models may also integrate a camera, microphone array, and AI-based video framing for hybrid meetings — eliminating the need for a separate conferencing device.
IFPD vs. Interactive Whiteboard
“Interactive whiteboard” is a broader term that includes both older projector-based systems and modern flat-panel displays. An IFPD is a specific form of interactive whiteboard: a self-contained flat-panel unit that does not require a separate projector or external computer to function.

IFPD vs. Smart Board
“Smart board” is a more colloquial term for the same category of product. “Interactive flat panel display” is the technically precise and procurement-oriented term. Both typically describe the same generation of devices: a large touchscreen with embedded computing, software, and collaboration capabilities.

IFPD vs. Regular Commercial Display
Capability | Regular display | Interactive flat panel |
Show presentations | ✓ | ✓ |
Touch and pen input | Usually no | ✓ |
Digital whiteboarding | External software required | Built in or supported |
Wireless presentation | External device often required | Built in or integrated |
Annotation over content | Limited | Designed for it |
Camera and microphones | Usually separate | May be integrated |
Multi-user collaboration | Limited | Designed for it |
A regular display may be sufficient when only one person controls content from a connected laptop. An IFPD becomes more useful when multiple people need to interact with or write on the screen, or when the room should function independently without a separate computer.
Where IFPDs Are Used
- Conference rooms and boardrooms
- Training and learning rooms
- Classrooms
- Design and project review spaces
- Hybrid meeting spaces
The requirements differ by environment. A classroom may prioritize writing responsiveness and annotation. A conference room may prioritize wireless sharing, camera quality, and meeting platform compatibility.
Operating System: Android or Windows?
The operating system is one of the most significant differentiators between IFPD models.
Android-based IFPDs are suited to whiteboarding, wireless casting, and supported meeting applications with straightforward shared operation.
Windows 11 Pro IFPDs support full desktop applications, enterprise management tools, and PC-centric workflows — equivalent to a Windows computer mounted on the wall.
